Ordination

Deaconate:
After taking the oath of aggregation a permanent member will be ordained to the deaconate by the local bishop. A permanent member is, thus, incardinated into the Society by ordination to the deaconate.

The amount of time serving as a transitional Deacon will depend on the circumstances of the Society and the member, but will usually be less than a year.

Priesthood:
Ordination to the priesthood by the local ordinary at the recommendation of the Superior General brings to completion what is usually called the period of “initial formation”. Ordained members, then, make themselves available for assignment by the Society leadership. The actual assignment will depend variously on the needs of the Society and the various local churches where Columbans serve, as well as the health, talents and aspirations of the member.

Priest members are encouraged to continue what is called “ongoing formation” so that they may continue to grow and mature in Christ, in their sense of vocation to mission, increasing their skill and ability to live and preach Good News, especially to the poor.

The Society offers its members a way of sanctification through participation in its missionary apostolate, through the faithful observance of its Constitutions and Directory, and through the exercise of priestly ministry.

By God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit a Columban will become a “man for others” belonging to Christ and not himself, becoming available to move forward the work of the Kingdom, even to the ends of the earth.

To be called to this “splendid cause” is a tremendous gift before which we humbly say to the Lord: Thank You!
